Celebrating Colors and Contrast - a subliminal love story

This time i want to celebrate colors and contrast.

Michelle has been a friend for quite some time now so directing the shoot and telling her the concept was definitely easier given the established connection between us. Shot at Rudford’s Restaurant, their 1950s ambience was a perfect location for the concept. Michelle’s styling combined with the striking tones of a vibrant San Diego urban setting was all perfect. The colors, the setting, and the wardrobe all perfectly aligned together and created a visual perfume that perfectly describes these two as lovers.

This is a sublime take to the beauty of embracing differences - that we can all be powerful as one. Inspired by 1950s, a generation that played a major role in civil rights movement, incorporating vibrant tones and contrasting colors as a subliminal approach to the beauty of love, unity, and respect despite of differences - in which all these elements describe Michelle and Scott’s love for each other.

In a country where everyone is labeled by colors, nothing else can perfectly describe this nation’s ideals than a man in service for the people falling in love with a migrant woman of color from Germany. A unity that symbolizes what this country stands for.

Like these two, we are all beautiful and more powerful if we can all become one… regardless.

DEREK + ELISE

“Antique rustic” is the best wording I’ve been able to come up with to describe this beautiful wedding—a style that fit this couple well! Once you see these detail shots below, you’ll know exactly what I mean! The colors and details were focused around modernized antique at the beautiful venue Giracci Vineyard and Farms, during our gorgeous California summer. With everything in full bloom and green, it couldn’t have been a better day to get married! If you haven’t been to a Californian winery, I completely recommend booking a trip at your earliest convenience to find out just what you’re missing out on! It was obvious Elise worked extremely hard on getting every aspect just the way she envisioned it because everything was perfect. The intensity of seeing all the details she had slaved over and thought over millions of times the last few months was made very real, and it was a privilege to see a dream come true.

I have shot weddings for many years, but I don’t remember having a bride with such a graceful excitement radiating from her. Even her name exudes grace! I had only met them both the day of the wedding, but I’m sure I’ll remember this wedding for long after. She lit up around Derek, and photographing them together at such a special occasion was a true reminder of why two people belong together for the rest of their lives. We shot around the venue for a bit and inside the barn, and I even got to shoot this couple with a beautiful horse! I think it was a perfect touch to a perfect day. It was wonderful seeing how gentle Derek was with Elise while we shot. They were happy, content, and comfortable to be themselves, and that’s what love is all about! I pride myself on capturing a moment in time, and who the person is at the time of the photograph. I believe the Grindles made my job very easy!

Their energy must have been contagious, because it was quite a party! Family and friends chatted and drank late into the evening, and enjoyed the beautiful array of goodies from the candy table! I love shooting candy tables. They are fun and exciting, and they add a splash of color and flavor to any wedding. This specific candy table was perfect! They definitely nailed it, and I had a great time photographing it. This live band was extremely pleasant to listen to, and they kept the party alive and going strong for hours! Perfect for the venue and the setting, the music gathered multiple people up to dance from around the venue. From wonderful music, smiles and laugher, great food, drinks loved ones, selfies, and memories to last a life time, I’d say this wedding was a huge success. Thank you so much, Elise and Derek for having me! Here’s to a lifetime of love and happiness!

TORY + DAWN

to the moon and back

I first met Dawn a couple of years back at a video shoot for her song “All of your days” for the Matt Wadleigh LOVE foundation, it was a very intimate night in a studio dimly lit with candles with few chosen guests and the fragrant scent of incense built up the vibe as Dawn and her band serenaded us with her captivating voice. That was the first time I met and heard Dawn sing and she struck me, she made me loose focus, I usually tend to tunnel vision and focus on shooting every time I have a camera on hand, but her music had me sit down and listen, it was a very lovely night to remember.

Years went by and a couple of portrait sessions after, I received the news from Dawn that she is getting married to Tory. I’ve never met Tory until our engagement shoot and I found out how amazing of a guy Tory is when Dawn told me about their love story, He was friend zoned for a couple of years leaving Dawn oblivious about his feelings for her, so just by being there for Dawn for years, he waited for the right moment, years went by until Tory finally gathered all the guts and told Dawn how he feels… well, it obviously went well.

Their story is a living example of a love story that we only see in the movies, from strangers to friends, to being friend zoned, going against all the odds, then finally, they become lovers, as cliché as it sounds… it’s real, it’s beautiful.

One thing I learned from Dawn and Tory is that no matter what, keep loving, regardless of the odds, whether you’ll live happily ever after or not, never hesitate, embrace it,  LOVE is a beautiful thing, it’s pure… don’t be afraid of it.
